煙 Smoke

One day, a woman called "A", who works for an apparel company, got on the bus to go to the office of a client of the company. At around midday, most of the passengers got off the bus at one of the terminals, and it was only "A" and the bus driver left. Then, a forlorn-looking, twenty-something woman in a red dress got on.
The woman was caked in makeup.
The woman sat in the seat directly behind "A", put her face close to the back of "A"'s neck and exhaled tobacco smoke.
Wondering what kind of person this was, and feeling slightly irritated, "A" turned to glare at the woman, but no body was there.
"A" looked around the bus, but of course, it was only her and the bus driver.
However, the tobacco smoke still hung in the air, and the unmistakeable smell of makeup remained.

親切 Kind

It was late at night when Mr Gotou got into the elevator in the apartment block.
Perhaps it was because he was tired, but as he watched the floors go by, he accidentally dropped his key from his hand.
"Oh!"
He stooped to pick it up again, but a man's hand reached out from behind him and silently handed him the key back.
There was no body else in the elevator...

The Elevator

This story is about the company for which a man named Hamada works.
The company's offices were in a town on the outskirts of Tokyo.
One day, Hamada, who was leaving work for the day, stood in front of the elevator and was just about to press the button. At that moment, the elevator door opened. The empty elevator in front of him was dimly lit. For a moment, Hamada was filled with fear, but then, thinking that someone had probably been there just before him and pressed the button, he got into the elevator.
Somebody must have pressed the button, but then remembered something they had to do, and gone off into one of the rooms on the first floor. Yes, that was probably it, Hamada convinced himself.
Hamada was a "sensitive" person, but he did not feel anything weird in the elevator.
However, since then, the phenomenon of the elevator doors opening before the button is pressed has occurred many times. Aside from Hamada, other employees have also experienced the same thing, and the elevator has been checked a lot. But no problems have been found.
“There’s no way the doors open without the button being pressed,” the man who checked the elevator would say angrily, before leaving.
And then, one morning shortly after this;
Hamada arrived first at the offices, as he had some urgent work to do. Unlocking the doors at the main entrance, Hamada stood in front of the elevator.
All of a sudden, the doors opened. Before him, was the dimly lit elevator cage.
As if frozen, Hamada was unable to move from that spot. No body had pressed the button before him- he was the first to use the elevator. There was no body in the building before him.
But there was no way the door could open, unless somebody pressed the button.
So who pressed it?
The doors before him closed.
Hamada moved away from the elevator, and headed toward the stairs.
Even now, the doors to that elevator sometimes open by themselves.

A rumour on an animation website.
Apparently, characters in the animation will talk to the people watching it. Despite the fact it's only a one way converation, they will call out to the viewer.
"How about it? Why don't you come over here? This is a really fun place to be!"
What is more, they will call the viewer by his or her name specifically, talking with a smile on their face. Even if the viewer feels uneasy and tries to ignore it, the animation will persist in talking to them.
"Don't ignore me!"
Finally, the animation will laugh maniacally, and shout "Come here! Come now, come on! Access this world!"
Those who are possessed by the animation are sucked into it, and trapped in there for eternity.

Ghost of a Hamster

Some friends of my family had a strange experience: they witnessed the ghost of a hamster.
"It was a strange experience."
The daughter of the household owned a hamster, which she loved. However, hamsters don't live for long, and after a few years, it died.
That same night, a strange rustling sound could be heard.
The sound was coming from the hamster's cage.
"That's odd... and impossible.."
Had cockroaches gotten into the cage? That is what the girl's father thought, so he searched the cage thoroughly, but he found nothing.
However, a while later, the noises started again.
"It was the ghost of my hamster."
That is was the girl believed.

Haunted Hospital in Nagoya

There is a hospital in Nagoya that is famous in the local area for being haunted.
Apparently, old people wander the corridors in the dead of night, and it is said that new nurses are always teased by these spirits.
A nurse will be working at the nurse station, and an old person will pass swiftly by, right before their eyes.
The spirit walks silently, as if gliding, wearing pyjamas of an impressive blue colour.
“Oh! What’s wrong?” the nurse calls, putting her head out from the nurse station. But the old person will continue to move silently.
“Please, wait a moment!” the nurse calls frantically, but the old person moves at a fast pace. Even running as fast as she can, the nurse cannot catch up. Eventually, unable to catch up, the exhausted nurse returns to the nurse station.
“What was with that man…?”
As the nurse utters this, sitting back down at her desk, the same old man will appear again, dangling upside down from the ceiling.
It is almost as if this is a welcoming ceremony from the spirit, who will apparently only appear to new nurses.

The Ferris Wheel Doesn't Stop

The Ferris wheel is a fad. For five minutes of a night view, it is probably around 700 yen. But that isn’t likely to stand in the way of two people who are madly in love.

Since Golden Week had been and gone, Miyuki and her friend decided to check out the latest ‘place to be’; as they figured it wouldn’t be too crowded.
“I went with my friend to ride the wheel.”
The Ferris wheel boasts the tallest in all of Japan, and so the queue was already long that day.
“There were more people there than there usually would be on a week day, probably because about half the year’s events had finished on that day. So there was a sign asking people to ride the Ferris wheel with people they may not know.”
For couples, this kind of arrangement is probably something to avoid, but for the two girls who had come together as friends and were on the hunt for boyfriends anyway, the opportunity to share a compartment with cute boys was welcomed. However, the person in the queue behind the two girls was, unfortunately, a young business man with a glum face.
“After a twenty minute wait, it was our turn.”
Under the instructions of the person monitoring the wheel, the two girls climbed aboard, along with the aforementioned business man. With only three people aboard, the door closed and the compartment began to rise up into the air.
Not being the talkative type, the two girls decided to keep their excitement to themselves.
“Suddenly, for some reason, my friend’s eyes widened. Even when I asked her what was wrong, she did not move.”
Turning her head, she saw that the business man in the seat opposite was rubbing at his wrist with something. The man was slashing at his wrist, as though trying to chop it off. His blood dripped down into his half-open bag.
“We were both paralysed… Tears poured from my friend’s eyes.”
When the man noticed the two girls staring, he lifted his head up, but ignored them and gauged deeper at his wrist.
Then, he severed a particularly large vein, and blood gushed from it, splattering onto the wall beside his seat. More and more blood dripped into the man’s bag. The man took a handkerchief and, with one hand, cleaned his blood from the wall. When he’d done, he let out a sigh, and slumped back down in the seat, still staring at the two girls.

Time almost stood still. Only the wheel, still suspended in mid air, seemed to shake subtly, as the compartment reached the top.
“Suddenly we girls began to scream, unable to look anymore.”
At that point, the man stretched his hand out to Miyuki, muttering something.
  ‘Look…look…” he muttered.
“He said ‘Look... That’s all you have to do’.”
‘I’m going to die soon. But I don’t want to die alone… so look… that’s all you have to do…’ the man said, staring unblinkingly at Miyuki and her friend.
Occasionally, the man would let out an agonised groan. The people down below, appearing like discarded dolls, watched the two girls- no one making any movement
Eventually, the blood stopped flowing, and the sound of the man’s breathing began to fade.
“Is he dead?” the friend asked, her voice hoarse.
It appeared as though there was nothing in the man’s eyes.
The compartment stopped at the bottom.
The two girls jumped out, screaming.
It is not known what happened after that.

A Mother Searching For Her Child

I found these in a sweet shop in Japan- a little packet of gum and a ghost story. They're for children, but only about 85 yen, great idea!

Three boys named Ichiro, Tada and Kiyo were by the sea.
During the day, they swam, and at night, they lit fireworks on the beach.
After the fireworks were finished, they noticed that it had become very dark on the beach.
"Should we go home?" someone suggested, and the three boys stood up.
Suddenly, a woman appeared. She was wearing a white dress, which was wet through.
"Aah!"
Terrfied, the boys fled.
The following day, they told their story to a man who lived close to the see.
"Ah, yes. That is the ghost of a woman, who's child drown in the sea. She jumped in to save the child, but she wasn't able to. She drowned too," the man told them. "Since then, it is said that the woman's ghost walks around the beach at night, looking for her child."

The Night Watchman

On the same evening I moved into a new apartment in Kanagawa, there was a knock at the door.
Who could it be? I had no nameplate outside my door, and I didn’t know anyone in the area. I decided to ignore it.
The next day, I bought a net curtain, and covered the whole window with it.
That evening, at 10 o’clock… another knock.
Nervously, I went to the front entrance. I put my face to the spy-hole in the door. It looked like a policeman, so I opened the door a crack.
“What is it?” I asked.
The policeman took some paper from his bag;
“Please fill in this patrol card. It’s used at times of disaster and whatnot.”
What was this?…. I told him it seemed like a lot of bother.
“This is a good thing. Fill it in. Do it now,” the policeman replied, smiling.
Sensing something wasn’t right, I closed the door.
“Apartment 110… a waste of time!” cried an angry voice from outside the door.
I phoned my landlady.
After I had told her what had happened, she spoke;
“Go to the shrine, and purchase an Ofuda.* Pin it up somewhere.”
She explained that it was a policeman who had died in an accident ten years earlier.
“I feel sorry for him,” she continued.
The next morning, I went immediately to the shrine to buy an Ofuda, and pinned it up in the entrance of my apartment. That night at around 10 o’clock, I heard what sounded like a scream outside.
After that, the policeman did not come back.

*An Ofuda is a talisman that can be bought at Shinto shrines, to be put up in one’s house. It is believed to protect the family from bad things, such as evil spirits or disease.

Hotel New Japan' (Continued)

Strange events also occurred in a hotel close to where ‘Hotel New Japan’ had been.
A man noticed a stain on the wall in the room in which he was staying.
“It’s strange… that stain is huge, yet the hotel staff haven’t noticed it…” the man- who was a regular at the hotel- murmured, looking at the stain.
“The stain looks like a human being…” the man thought.
For indeed, the stain did appear to be in the shape of a human figure, with arms and legs.
Deciding there was nothing he could do, the man thought no more of it and went to sleep.

The man woke up in the middle of the night, because it was extremely hot.
“What’s with this heat?” the man was surprised- it was winter, yet the temperature of the room felt like that of mid-summer.
“Strange. Must be a problem with the air conditioning.”
Sitting up slightly, the man reached for the telephone to call the front desk. But as he did so, his eyes fell upon the stain on the wall.
Without thinking, he dropped the telephone receiver.
“W..what the hell is with that stain!”
The stain was moving around, like a human in terrible pain- arms and legs quivering.
“What….What the hell is this?!” the man cried, still staring at the wall. Just then, he heard a voice coming from the direction of the stain.
“....Ot…”
The man strained his ears.
Still flailing it’s arms and legs around in agony, the stain had begun to emit a voice.
“H…o….t…”
“It must be the spirit of someone who died in the fire at Hotel New Japan!” the man thought. He realised that the wall the stain was on faced the place where ‘Hotel New Japan’ had once stood.
Then, right before the eyes of the dumbfounded man, the stain stopped moving, and all at once, the temperature of the room returned to normal…

My trip to the Ju-On house!

Well, thought I'd share this, since it was Halloween... yesterday. (Yes, I'm a little late. But the call of the paranormal channel line up on Sky+ was just too tempting.)

Last year, whilst I was living in Tokyo, my friend and I took a trip to the house from the Japanese 'Ju-On' films.
The house is in a very secluded neighbourhood in the Saitama prefecture, and it took us about 3 hours to find it.

On the train...

On our way!

First we found the bridge used at the end of 'Ju-On: The Grudge 2'

We walked around for ages, asking various people. And then eventually....
WE FOUND IT!

Back garden...

Another building next to the main house, used in the original straight-to-video films, as Kyoko's parent's house

The back of the house...

Hotel New Japan'

This story is about a fire at ‘Hotel New Japan’- the worst hotel fire in history.
After the fire, the area where the hotel had stood was neglected, and there were whispers of many ghost stories.

A taxi went to the place where the hotel had once been, to pick up a customer.
“Where to, madam?”
“To Aoyama, please,” said the woman, who talked with a distant voice.
Her head was bowed, meaning that the taxi driver could not see her face properly. She seemed like an unusually dark woman. And her clothes smelt of yakiniku (fried meat).
“Well, you appear to be a woman but… you’ve been eating yakiniku?” the taxi driver laughed. He thought it strange that this career-woman dressed in a top-of-the-range suit, had just been eating yakiniku.
Either way, she’s burnt something
, the driver had thought.
“Is Aoyama close by?”
But as the driver turned round, he was astonished.
There was no body in the back seat.
“Ohhh! The woman is gone!”
Of course, there were no traces of her.
“That woman… was a…g..ghost!!”
At last, the driver understood that it was the ghost of a woman who had lost her life in the fire at ‘Hotel New Japan.’
In the car from which the woman had vanished, the smell of burnt meat lingered. It never went away.
And these incidents were numerous.
For that reason, taxi drivers completely stopped picking up customers from that spot.

There are other stories about the fire at ‘Hotel New Japan.’
Because the wreckage of the building was left there after the fire, people often reported to have heard voices calling for help, or to have seen white human shadows- the spirits were still lost.
Incidentally, the headquarters of a life insurance firm were built where the hotel had once been… but the company went bankrupt after the crash of the bubble economy.
I pray that the victims of the fire rest in peace.

Okiku’s Well @ Himeji Castle

This one isn't a rare ghost story, it is in fact one of the oldest and most famous in Japan- one that undoubtedly influenced 'Ringu.' However, I thought I'd share it, as well as some pictures from my visit to the story's location.

This is only one version of the story. There are several others.

Long, long ago, a girl worked for a Samurai house. Her master had ten dishes which he treasured. One day, the girl was accused by the master’s wife of stealing one of the dishes, and beaten.
Of course, the girl had never  stolen anything, but had no way to clear her name, so she threw herself into the well.
The truth was, the wife had broken one of the dishes and had thrown it into the well.

It was a hot summer, a few days after the girl’s death. Night after night,  the girls’ ghost would appear out of the well, and begin to count the dishes in a sad, pained voice.
“One… two… three…”
She could count up to nine, but could not count the tenth dish, so began to cry, before disappearing back into the well. This strange event occurred every night and before they knew it, the house had become known as ‘The Dish Mansion.’
The master became very ill because of what was happening, and asked a friend for advice.
“Obviously, the girl cannot rest in peace,” said the friend. “I’ll get rid of the ghost.”
That evening, he hid near the well and waited for the ghost to come out.
Sure enough, the ghost of the girl in a white kimono, with long hair and limp hands appeared.
As usual, she began to count.“One… two… three…”
When she had counted up until nine, the master’s friend shouted;“TEN!”
The ghost disappeared in an instant.
She has never appeared again since.

In February of 2010, whilst still living in Japan, I took a trip from Tokyo to Kansai. Whilst there I visited Himeji Castle, and saw the famous well from the story, named 'Okiku's Well.'

The Bad Dream

I woke up in the middle of the night and called to my mother;
"Put the light on, I want to go to the toilet!"
My parents' bed room was next to the room that I shared with my brother, and next to that was a Western-style room. Opposite this was the bathroom.
When my mother switched the bathroom light on for me, a shadow of something on all fours appeared, from somewhere behind the three piece sofa in the Western-style room. I could see a black shadow.
"It's my brother, trying to scare me!" I said, on the verge of tears.
But my mother, who was waiting outside the toilet, hurried me along. "Your brother is asleep. No body is there. Hurry up, I'm waiting here for you."
In tears, I rushed past the sofa and made it to the toilet. However, when I left the bathroom again, I could now see the same shadow, peeping out at me from the bedroom.
Crying harder, I called for my mother, and she took my hand, taking me back to the bedroom.
I returned to my futon without looking behind me, and saw that my brother was indeed fast asleep on his own futon. It was a one off scary experience.

The Phone Box

Owing to the current popularity of mobile phones, we rarely see public telephone boxes in towns anymore.
However, once upon a time, phone boxes were installed here and there around towns.
This story takes place at the time when a girl we shall 'Y' was a student.
On the route Y took home from school, there was a telephone box in a convenient location.
The phone box was opposite a temple, in a place surrounded by trees that was hard to see from the main road, and well shadowed.
"This place is great, huh? Hardly anyone uses this phone, so we won't have to worry about troubling people, AND we won't get caught by the teachers!"
For Y and her friends, who went to an all-girls high school, the phone box was convinient indeed. Of course, the people they wished to phone were their boyfriends, or male friends. The contents of their conversations were not all that important, yet phoning boys felt fresh and exciting.
Y and her friends often used that phone box on their way home from school.

On one occasion, she saw something strange in the phone box.
To the transparent wall of the phone box, stuck what appeared to be a human finger nail.
"W- What is that? Is that somebody's finger nail?"
Upon closer inspection, the girls discovered that there several of these finger nails, which were stained with a red substance that resembled blood.
"Yuck! That's creepy! What the hell is that!"
"Seriously, are they somebody's fingernails?!"
The girls did not use the telephone, but instead went to the nearby temple and spoke to one of the workers, who was cleaning.
The shaven-headed man inclined his head in confusion.
"Our worshippers use that phone box too. I've told them to throw their litter away properly!" he grumbled, as he cleaned the telephone box with a cloth.

What happened in that phone box?
Y had an uncomfortable feeling that she could not shake.
But after that day, the girls were not able to use the phone box. That was not to say that there was any particular fault or specific reason- the phone simply did not connect, no matter how many times one tried to dial.
"Looks like we can't use this phone anymore," the girls decided, and after that they began to use another phone box.
Y could simply not understand what had happened with the phone.
During a family reunion, she showed the phone box to a relative- a woman who was medium.
"This is the phone box."
Upon looking at the phone box that Y had pointed had, the medium began to tremble violently.
"D...Don't use this phone box!"
"Why?" asked Y. "What on earth happened here?!"
"A woman covered in blood is using this telephone over and over. She tears her finger nails against the wall as she uses the phone, screaming and crying."
Upon hearing the vision that the medium had had, Y vowed never to so much as pass by the phone box again.

According to a story later told, by a close friend of somebody connected to the nearby temple, a woman used the phone box frequently to call a man for whom she had unrequited love.
The man was not interested in her, and eventually began pretending to be out so that he did not have to answer her calls. The woman was consumed with grief, and dialled his number so many times that her finger nails peeled away.
Finally, she committed suicide in the phone box.

Just starting out!

First post!
The rest of my posts will be Japanese ghost stories, folklore and urban legends- in their original Japanese forms and in my English translations.
So I suppose just a little bit about me; I've just graduated from a university in the UK, with a degree in Japanese Studies. My main interest throughout my studies has been ghost stories and folklore, as I am a very big fan of Japanese horror cinema. I spent one year living in Japan and studying at Keio University in Tokyo. It was during this year that I picked up a lot of my material. In my final year at university, I completed a 12,000 word dissertation on the representation of women in Japanese horror film, in comparison to that of Hollywood and remakes of Asian horror.
